Fostered Newfs

After adopting 3 newfs through rescue we decided we wanted to help save other newfs in need of a second chance. In May of 2002 we fostered our first newf, Izzy. Since then we have fostered Chance, Smokie, Audery, Suzie, Chaz and Indy. We hope you enjoy reading about these rescue and seeing photos of some of them.

Izzy came into rescue from Louisville KY. Her former owner was moving and could not keep her. Her former owner was someone that really shouldn't have a dog at all. Izzy had no health care other than what the vet gave her out of pitty. The vet tried for years to get the owne to surrender her into rescue. They were happy Izzy was in rescue and that she would be going to a home where she would be loved. Izzy was adopted by a family in nothern Indiana. This photo is of Izzy with her forever family.
Indy came to us from a family in Indiana. They said their neighbor had threatened Indy's life so they felt they had to place her into rescue. Indy was very neglected. He had practically no hair. His eyes were sad and he was starved for attention. The photo to the right is of Indy just before he went to his forever home. Indy stayed with us for 8 weeks and was adopted by a family in South Carolina who has another newf and a newf mix for Indy to play with.
The photo to the far left was how Indy looked the day we got him. The other was taken just before he left us. His hair had started to grow back.

Chance came to use from a family in southern Indiana. At the age of 4 months he was confined to the back yard with no one to love or play with him. The owner's had 5 young children and the husband traveled a lot for his work. The wife said she didn't have time for a dog. The decision to place him into rescue came when the children were afraid to play in the back yard because Chance wanted to play with him. Obviously he had no training so he ran the children over. Chance was quite a handsome boy and it was very hard for us to place him with his forever family. In our hearts we wanted to keep him but we knew he had to go. Chance was adopted by a single lady from Long Island NY who also had another newfoundland. Sadly one year after adopting Chance she made the hardest decision there is to make. Chance started having uncontrolable seizures. She chose to free him from his pain. Chance lives on forever in our hearts.

Smokie came from a family in Ohio. They said Smokie was attacking their other dogs and they could not keep her. We reluctently agreed to foster her because of this. However Smokie was the sweetest girl you could imagine. Smokie recently had a litter of puppies and her thyroid was low. No wonder the poor girl was so confused. She also had a few other issues to iron out. She exhibited behavior common to that of dogs that are tied. Out in our big 5 acre play yard she would only run in circles to the right--smaller and smaller circles. It was so sad to watch. Finally, one day we were able to get her to run in a straight line. After that she would race across the field like the wind. Soon she was spay and her thyroid condition was under control Smokie was placed with a family a few miles from us. The photo to the left is Smokie (she is the newf on the right) her forever family. Lucky for us we get to see Smokie quite often.
