Samantha's Story

Samantha AKA Sam came to live with us December 5, 1998, her first birthday. We were able to adopt her through Heartland Of America Newf Rescue and her breeders, Matt and Jean Cobban.  She was very undisciplined and strong minded when we got her.  If she wanted something she would do anything to get it, even bare her teeth at you.  She was not really mean; she just didn’t know that life had rules and regulations.  The first two weeks we had her, we though we had made a mistake.  She was a very demanding and bull headed girl.  One day, just as if a light bulb came on, she changed her attitude and realized the world did not revolve around her.

Since then she has been a pleasure to have.Needless to say there is never a dull moment with Sam around.  She is a very happy girl.  She loves to play and will relentlessly push a toy in your face till you give in and play.  She is very eager to please and a fast learner.  In the past year she has flourished.  She has earned her UKC CD title in three straight trials with one first and 2-second place finishes.  She also earned her AKC CD in three consecutive trials with grand finale at the 2001 National Specialty where she finished second for her title.  She also has her ASCA CD with one second, one third and one forth place finishes. She is also a Delta Certified Therapy Dog and TDI.

Samantha is very athletic and loves to do agility.  In her first agility trial she ran two times, both runs were 15-20 seconds below the allowed time and they were CLEAN runs!! In the June 2001 issue of Front and Finish she was listed as tied for Number One in the country in Newfoundland Novice A Standard Agility.  She also loves to pull her cart. She earned her draft title at the 2003 NCA National Specialty. In Novemeber of 2003 she also earned her Team Draft Dog Title. In February 2004 she was honored at the Sounth Central Newfoundland Club's award banquet as Top Working Newf in 2003. Samantha is now in training for her Water Dog title.

At our 2000 County Fair I was able to show her in the “fun” conformation match. There were a total of 84 Dogs shown—some had their Championships in their respective breeds—and Sam was awarded Grand Champion over all. We were not able to show in 2001 and 2002. In 2003 we were finally able to show Samantha again at the fair. This time she was awarded Reserve Grand Champion. When Sam turns 7 we will show her as a vetern. Samantha is very much a daddy's girl. She has to be within seeing distance of "daddy" all the time. We are very lucky to have Samantha. We love her dearly.
