Panda

Panda came "home" Sunday June 24th, 2000.   She quickly became my velcro newf.    She follows me everywhere.    She loves attention and learns very quickly.    She really didn't know how to lead, but now she walks beside me on a loose lead.   I don't know if this is from training or her desire to stay close to me.   She is eating very well, which is good because she needs to gain 10-15 pounds.

Panda was surrendered into rescue by her owners of 6 years. The owner recently got married and a job that requires her to travel a lot. Rather than keep boarding Panda for long periods of time, she felt a new home would be in her best interest. I can't imagine what it would be like to give up a pet. I admire Panda's previous owner for putting Panda's welfare before her own feelings.

We were told she had heartworms before we got her from rescue, further testing showed that she was heartworm free.   She had other health issues that need to be dealt with.   She had a urinary tract infection.   Her guard hairs are falling out, in fact, she hardly has any guard hairs at all. The results of the thyroid test proved her to be low thyroid. She was also spayed and had a growth removed from her gums.

After Panda was given a clean bill oh health, we decided to start her training. She learns very quickly and is eager to please. When we hooked her to a cart, she baulked a few times, then she pulled it as if she has done it every day of her life. She earned her draft title in October, just 4 months after we adopted her. Since then she has also obtained her Team Draft Dog title.

Panda is a very smart girl. She knows how to open the screen doors and any gate she does not want to be behind. We have to keep locks on any gate/door we don't want her to open.

Panda passed her Delta Therapet Certification with only a 2 point deduction. One for a slow sit and one for a slow down. I was not upset with this besides what Newf isn't slow???? She is also certified though TDI. She now visits Children's Medical Center. Please see the "Therapy Page" for photos of Panda with the children.

Panda is now 10 years old and is still my special girl. She thinks her purpose in life is to be by my side and give kisses. You won't find me complaining about that at all!!
